For those of you who do not know the story of Madeleine McCann, she is the now 4 year old British child, who went missing May 2007, while on vacation with her parents in Portugal. Her parents are now being considered suspects in her disappearance. Although the news is now focused on whether or not her parents had anything to do with this heinous crime, my thoughts wander to a different question. Believe me when I say that my heart definitely goes out to the McCann's, but I need an explanation as to how parents could leave three small children -- all under the age of four -- in a hotel room, without any supervision whatsoever, in a strange country, with the door unlocked? They left their children, not for emergency purposes, but to have dinner with friends.
With hundreds of thousands of children missing around the world today, I find the actions on the part of the McCann's deplorable, and irresponsible. What were these "parents" thinking? We are not talking about individuals that have no social or educational skills. From what I understand, both the McCanns are doctors. Also, is anyone concerned about the safety of the two year old twins? I realize that there will be some, maybe a majority, of readers who will be taken aback by this statement; but, someone has to step outside of the box and address this issue. When are we going to start fighting for the safety of our defenseless children?
As a parent, the fact that we still have not learned to place our children as immediate priorities never ceases to amaze me. I could not for one minute imagine leaving my small children alone
at home, let alone in a strange hotel room, with the doors unlocked. What I would like to know, is whether or not the British social services is reviewing this case.
I pray everyday for the safety of Madeleine. Nothing is more heart wrenching than having a child taken from you without word or preparation. It is even more heart wrenching to have to imagine what this poor baby might be going through if she is in the hands of a deranged pedophile.
I read some of the excerpts from Kate McCann's diary, in which she states that her children were too hyper, and that she was drained. Well, Kate, welcome to the real world. The unfortunate part of all of this, is that the McCann's, at the expense of their child, have had to learn a very painful, unimaginable lesson about parental responsibility -- one that we should all pay close attention to.
