Graco Recalls Strollers Due to Fingertip Amputation and Laceration Hazards



WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.



Name of Product: Graco's Passage, Alano and Spree Strollers and Travel Systems



Units: About 1.5 million



Manufacturer: Graco Children's Products Inc., of Atlanta, Ga.



Hazard: The hinges on the stroller's canopy pose a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is opening or closing the canopy.



Incidents/Injuries: Graco has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller's canopy hinge mechanism while the canopy was being opened or closed, resulting in five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations.



Description: This recall involves Graco Passage, Alano and Spree Strollers and Travel Systems with the following model numbers and specific hinge mechanisms:

Graco manufactured two different styles of hinge mechanisms for these stroller models. Only strollers or travel systems with a plastic, jointed hinge mechanism that has indented canopy positioning notches (see photo below) are included in this recall. The recalled strollers were manufactured between October 2004 and February 2008. The model number and manufacture date are located on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.




Sold at: AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies "R" Us, Toys "R" Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide from October 2004 and December 2009 for between $80 and $90 for the strollers and between $150 and $200 for the travel systems.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Graco to receive a free protective cover repair kit.

Name of Product: Young Artist Easels

Units: About 10,000

Manufacturer: MacPherson's, of Emeryville, Calif.

Hazard: The chalkboard surface coating contains high levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves a children's art easel which has a chalkboard surface on one side and a white board surface on the other side. The item number is AA13301 and the UPC number is 082435133010 which can be found on the original packaging.

Sold at: Art supply stores nationwide and online from July 2004 through June 2009 for about $75.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumer should immediately take these recalled easels away from children and contact the firm to receive a free replacement chalkboard panel.

Adventure Playsets Recall to Repair Backyard Swing Sets Due to Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Adventure Playsets Wooden Play Sets

Units: About 275,000 in the United States and 6,800 in Canada

Distributor: Adventure Playsets, of Amarillo, Texas

Hazard: The plastic coated lumber on the horizontal ladder (monkey bar/swing beam) can weaken over time due to rotting of the whitewood (spruce, pine and fir species), resulting in a fall hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Adventure Playsets has received more than 1,400 reports of rotting ladders involving 16 injuries that resulted in nine emergency room visits. The injuries include two arm fractures, lacerations, scrapes, and bruises to children younger than 8 years old. Most of the reported injuries occurred when the swing came out of the monkey bar/ swing beam that had rotted.


Description: This recall involves wooden play sets with swings, slides and ladders. Each set has an overhead monkey bar ladder that acts as both the monkey bar and swing beam, and an end ladder coated with cranberry or green plastic. The instruction manual has the name "Adventure Playsets" and one of the following model numbers printed on the cover.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the swing sets and contact Adventure Playsets to receive a replacement kit.

Note: All recalled swing sets have a horizontal ladder that acts as both a monkey bar and swing beam, and an end latter coated with cranberry or green plastic. The replacement kit includes the horizontal ladder and the vertical end truss support pieces.
