I'm not asking for donations here. I don't have millions, but what I do have, is the ability to help a few infant and children that live in poverty. God has blessed me in many ways. One of the ways I can pay him back, is by paying my community back.

I own an infant and children online store. Three years ago I started donating gently used clothing to families within my community. I have also donated to a few community organizations with the stipulation that they could not charge these families. But I want to do more. This is where you can help.

When you make a purchase at My Kidz Got Style, http://www.mykidzgotstyle.com, and you provide me the name of a child that is truly in need, not only do you receive a free gift, but I will send the needy child a gift of clothing in your name. Even if you decide not to purchase anything, please reach out to your community and send a name. So, you see, you can help as well.

In order to qualify, the family must prove that they are currently in dire need.

Stay blessed.

Crescentia O'Neal-Seralathan, Owner

My Kidz Got Style

In a message for the Day, the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation, Juan Somavia, says this year's focus is on girls trapped in child labour, toiling in the fields from sunrise to sunset. ILO is also highlighting the plight of girls working unseen in domestic labour or those living and working on the streets around the world. The ILO estimates that some 100 hundred millions girls are in child labour, with 53 million in hazardous work. Most importantly , the organisation says that investing in girls' education and training is an investment in equality and social progress. It adds that a girl with education is better equipped to break the cycle of child labour and poverty. The UN childrens agency, UNICEF, which is also marking the day, has called for action to tackle the underlying poverty that leads to child labour. UNICEF stresses that improving access to quality education, particularly for girls in poor and rural areas, is a key part of an effective overall approach.

The mother noticed a small sneaker buried in the sand. Thinking that it belonged to one of the children at the playground, she attempted to recover it, and return the sneaker to its rightful owner. Instead, she made a discovery that was unimaginable. Attached to the sneaker was the body of a three-year-old boy. For nearly one week, authorities searched desperately to identify the child -- circulating sketches throughout the neighborhood. The toddler was soon identified as Tyruss Toribio. What is so shocking about this story is that Tyruss was smothered to death by his mother, 23-year-old, Tiffany Toribio, a member of the Zia Pueblo Indian tribe.

Apparently, Tiffany had been asked to leave both her mother's and a friend's home because she was ignoring her son, and "witholding affection." With no place to go, both she and her son slept for days in the very same park his body was found. A strange twist to this story is that young Tyruss appeared to have been well cared for; and, there was no immediate evidence of abuse. So, what went wrong here? According to authorities, Tiffany smothered her baby boy while he was sleeping on a climbing gym. When asked how she could have committed such a despicable crime, Ms. Toribio stated that, "she did not want her son to be raised with no one caring about him the same way she had to grow up with no one caring about her," according to Police Chief Ray Schultz.

So, Tiffany has been branded a horrible mother, and has been judged solely responsible for her son's death. End of story, right? Wrong. It has to be explained to me how not one, but two people could have not only kicked this woman and her child to the streets, but do so after they both claim that she was not physically or emotionally attentive to her son? Why didn't anyone call the police or social services to voice their concerns? My question is, is Tiffany the only culprit here? Could this child have been saved?

Although she had been labeled a "partier," Ms. Toribio had no criminal record, or a history of either drug or alcohol abuse. This leaves me to believe that she may very well suffer from some form of mental illness that had not been diagnosed or treated. If this is in fact the case, then the death of little Tyruss, not only lies on the shoulder of his mother, but on society as a whole.

According to Women's Health USA, mental disorders are most common amongst women between the ages of 18-25, with close to 23 percent of this age group showing signs of serious psychological distress. Twice as many women have diagnosable mental illness as their male counter parts. Yet, women are less likely to receive proper treatment, or support.

My heart goes out to the Toribio family. The death of a child is never easy to grasp – especially when it is at the hands of its mother. However, I can’t help but feel that the support net for Tiffany failed as well. First, if Tiffany’s non-responsive behavior towards her child was so severe that she was thrown out of not one, but two homes, a call to HHS and the police should have been placed. Ms. Toribio was in apparent need of psychological assistance. Second, what concerned individual would kick a child and his non-attentive mother out into the streets? Did they not fear for the child’s safety?

I just don’t get it.

I am totally disgusted by both sides. I am most disgusted about the number of children who have lost their lives...the innocent, the babies. At what point does the world say enough, stop it. I don't see how anyone can condone the killing of innocent women and children. It is despicable.

To Israel, you move people from their homes, and place them in make shift slums; unable to travel freely, and are left to live like animals -- a plight that you should know all too well. Shame on you. To Hamas, you are cowards to hide behind the coattails of your women and children while they are being slaughtered like cattle. Shame on you as well.

You both hide behind the name of God; yet you do the work of evil. When you start using the innocent as pawns to obtain your victories, then I say you both should burn in hell, and may God have mercy on your souls.

An 8 year old from St John's, Arizona, has been charged with the shooting death of his father, and his father's coworker, who rented a room in the house. Although other news reports have done so, I will not use the family's name. What is truly horrifying about this incident, is that this was apparently no accident: the third grader allegedly confessed to police that he planned the murders. The victims were shot execution style. The St John's police department is pressing to charge the child with first degree murder, as an adult.

I must say that I have to question the circumstances surrounding the confession. There was no adult, or attorney present when the child was questioned. The fact that the police department had this child in custody, questioning him without a parent or legal guardian, which by the way is illegal, just does not sit right with me. The child more than likely was in shock, and I have to question the tactics used by the police department to get the child to confess while under duress. I seriously doubt that an 8 year old can fully understand the intensity of this type of situation.

From all accounts this boy and his father had an extremely tight bond -- a fantastic relationship. The neighbors, the school, the pastor, everyone described the boy and his father as pillars of the community. What strikes me the most in cases such as this is there are almost always comments from the community depicting the characters involved as fantastic people, who had no issues at home. Well, if his confession holds true, in order for this child to plan and execute such a heinous crime that most adults deem unspeakable, there had to be something wrong in that household. While most third graders are planning birthday parties, etc., this child was planning to kill his parent. Something was definitely wrong. Although there have never been any complaints or signs of child abuse, the police department is seeking to make this a determining factor.

As I think about this story more and more, something just does not seem to fit in this case. The child was an excellent student, and had never been in trouble prior to the shootings. Nor does it appear that the child had any psychological issues. From all accounts, he was a normal healthy 8 year old. It could be possible that the coworker was the abuser. It could also be possible that the coworker murdered the father, and the child responded in self defense. It is also possible that someone was invading the home, and the child was again, acting in self defense. According to the child's defense attorney, the police department has no physical evidence to link the child to his father's murder. There are so many different scenarios that could fit this tragedy. We'll just have to await the outcome.

One issue that was brought to the forefront was that the father, an avid hunter, actually taught his son how to use guns. This raises the question as to whether or not it is appropriate for someone so young to be able to use something so deadly. On the day that his father was buried, the 8 year old was in a court room, in handcuffs and shackles. There lies the tragedy.

Viewpoints are welcome.

Well, not in Paramus, NJ. Alex Woinski , a 13 year old student at West Brook Middle School, was sent home from school because his costume was deemed disruptive and defensive. What did he wear, you might ask? Alex was dressed as Jesus Christ. That's right, the sent Jesus home. Alex wasn't preaching, he just wore the costume. It was a rather well designed costume at that.

According to reports, the principal of West Brook Middle School, Joan Kelly Broe, said that the boy was sent home because the costume was disruptive to other students. "Children were asking, where is the boy who is Jesus Christ?" principal Broe told WCBS-TV. "It was disrupting the education process." Other students were ordered to alter their costumes if they were deemed inappropriate, but no one else was sent home. Now, I am a firm believer in the separation of church and state, but this is ridiculous.

Is this principal saying that students just stopped working, and were running around in packs in search of Jesus? Come on! I mean, how bad could it have been? Was his costume more offensive than those that had to be altered? Interestingly enough, if you go to Ms. Broe's West Brook page, she greets you with this quote: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." --William Butler Yeats. Seems like the fire was put out on this one. Hope Ms. Broe dusted off her witch's costume after putting a damper on something that is supposed to be fun.

I really am curious about this one, folks. Do you think Alex should have been sent home because of his Halloween costume? Just drop us a note.

Kids everywhere are choosing their favorite costume and looking forward to their favorite treats. As parents and caregivers prepare for this celebration, we at My Kidz Got Style would like to provide a few safety tips to keep in mind, so that no child is haunted by Halloween-related injuries. Hidden dangers associated with costumes, treats, and decorations can be easily prevented.

Please follow these safety tips to ensure this year's holiday is a safe one:

When purchasing costumes, masks, beards and wigs, look for flame-resistantfabrics such as nylon or polyester, or look for the label "Flame Resistant."Flame-resistant fabrics will resist burning and should extinguish quickly. Tominimize the risk of contact with candles and other fire sources, avoidcostumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves orbillowing skirts.

Purchase or make costumes that are light, bright and clearly visible to motorists.

For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes withreflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacksalso should be light-colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle and sporting goods stores.

Children should carry flashlights to see and be seen.

Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Oversized high heels are not agood idea.

Tie hats and scarves securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes and obstructing vision.

If your child wears a mask, make sure it fits securely, provides adequate ventilation, and has eye holes large enough to allow full vision.

Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of soft, flexible materials.

Supervise pumpkin carvings to avoid lacerations.

Warn children not to eat any treats until an adult has examined them carefully for evidence of tampering.

Carefully examine any toys or novelty items received by trick-or-treaters underthree years of age. Do not allow young children to have any items that are small enough to present a choking hazard or that have small parts or componentsthat could separate during use and present a choking hazard.

Keep candles and Jack O' Lanterns away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame.

Indoors, keep candles and Jack O' Lanterns away from curtains, decorations andother combustibles that could catch fire.

Do not leave burning candles unattended.

Remove obstacles from lawns, steps and porches when expecting trick-or-treaters.

Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety by arecognized testing laboratory, such as UL. Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Discard damaged sets.

Don't overload extension cords.

By all means, have a spooktastic Halloween

I'm sure most have seen this in the headlines. A few weeks ago, in good old Harrold, Texas, a small town located just across the Oklahoma border, the school board decided to come up with legislation which will allow teachers to pack pistols starting this school year. You heard me correctly, teachers will be bringing guns to school. Is this like something from out of the wild west or what?

It is reported that the town has only one school with 110 students (first red flag). It has not been reported, however, whether the students who attend the school are of elementary, middle, or high school age. When you really think about it, I don't think it much matters. What does matter is whether or not it is the responsibility of school districts to instill paranoia in our children? What are our children learning from this debacle?

During an earlier interview, school superintendent, David Thweatt, justified the school boards decision by stating that the town of Harrold is near a highway, and is 30 minutes from the nearest police station (second red flag)-- leaving the students and teachers vulnerable. He further states that, "When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that's when all of these shootings started. Why would you put it out there that a group of people can't defend themselves?(third red flag) That's like saying 'sic 'em' to a dog."(fourth, fifth, and sixth red flag) Is it me, or has the guy totally lost his mind. Somebody needs to "sic" the dog on him and those other wackos who think this is such a marvel idea.

First of all, the town needs to get some law enforcement. Even the town of Mayberry had Andy and Barney. Come on guys, this is the 21st century. Secondly, let's say the school is attacked, how is a pistol going to stack up to someone with an arsenal of Ak47's and ammunition? Let's see, maybe, after intense planning to blow away half the school, the assailant will have second thoughts because teachers carry pistols Or, maybe he'd simply die from laughter. Does the school board and superintendent really think that by allowing teachers to carry guns to school such attacks as the ones that occurred at Columbine and Virgina Tech would be prevented? Is it really a teacher's responsibility to act as a law enforcement agent?

I dunno, call me stupid, but for obvious reasons, let's just say I think this is a really bad idea. I don't know about you, but I am highly concerned about one of these guns getting into the wrong hands -- namely a child. The death rate amongst youth, due to gunfire is steadily growing. What concerns me even more is the possibility of a teacher using a gun as a means of discipline.

Now to be perfectly honest I have not yet read the logistics of this legislation. But a few questions come to mind as to how this all will be carried out. First, will the teachers actually have guns in the classroom while students are there? 2) will the teachers have to go through mandatory gun safety courses? 3) what security measures have been put in place to ensure that a student does not get access to a teachers gun? 4) will each teacher be psychologically tested?
These are just a few question that immediately came to mind. I am sure that you have many others. I would really like to get some feedback on this one. Let me know whether you agree or disagree with this school board's decision and rationale.

According to United Nations News Center reports, "Haitian children remain the target of kidnappings, killings, sexual violence, and child trafficking." Since January, a record number of 69 children have been kidnapped by armed gangs, and viciously abused, raped, or murdered, compared to a total of 80 for all of 2007. Many of these children were on their way to school...over half of them are young girls.

In the small town of MINUSTAH, one in three victims are children, particularly young girls. The towns of Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien are the most notorious for these vicious attacks. On August 19, 2008, the body of a twelve year old boy was found when his parents were unable to pay the ransom. Over the past week, three more young girls were abducted, the ages of these children are eight, seven, and three. The three year old has since been found, and is recovering in a hospital with injuries from a razor blade. In a few instances, children were still murdered even though their ransoms were paid. These depraved gangs show no prejudice, as they kidnap children from the very rich, to the poorest of families.

In an ironic twist, the kidnapping and killing of children began after a crack down on adult kidnappings. What a trade off. Hopefully, when these freaks who area committing these crimes are tried and convicted, they are imprisoned for the rest of their lives. Giving them the death penalty would be letting them off easy. For the rest of their natural lives, they should be left with the imprint of their victims faces as they were committing these heinous acts of violence.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, and their families. I cannot even imagine the pain that they are now experiencing. I only hope that the healing process leaves little or no scars on these young victims.

On September 29, 2007, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo. became
entrapped in the metal bars of the bassinet and died.

CPSC is issuing this safety alert because SFCA Inc., the company which
purchased all of Simplicity Inc.’s assets at public auction in April 2008, has
refused to cooperate with the government and recall the products. SFCA
maintains that it is not responsible for products previously manufactured by
Simplicity Inc.

The Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets contain metal bars
spaced farther apart than 2 3/8 inches, which is the maximum distance allowed
under the federal crib safety standard. The metal bars are covered by an
adjustable fabric flap which is attached by velcro. The fabric is folded down
when the bassinet is converted into a bed-side co-sleeping position. If the
velcro is not properly re-secured when the flap is adjusted, an infant can slip
through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars and suffocate. This
warning does not cover bassinets produced in recent months that have fabric
permanently attached over the lower bar.

Due to the serious hazard these bassinets pose to babies, CPSC urges all
consumers to share this safety warning with day care centers, consignment
stores, family and friends to ensure that no child is placed to sleep in a
Simplicity convertible bassinet covered by this warning.
The Commission voted, using its new authorities in the Consumer Product Safety
Improvement Act, to release this warning upon making a finding that the health
and safety of the public require immediate notice.

To see this release on CPSC's web site, including pictures of the recalled
product, please go to: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08378.html

********************************************************
Six Retailers Agree To Stop Sale and Recall Simplicity Bassinets Due To
Strangulation Hazard

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 28, 2008
Release #08-381
CPSC Recall Hotline: (800) 638-2772
CPSC Media Contact: (301) 504-7908

Six Retailers Agree To Stop Sale and Recall Simplicity Bassinets Due To
Strangulation Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging
retailers across the country to protect the health and safety of babies by
stopping sale and recalling nearly 900,000 dangerous Simplicity bassinets.
Yesterday, CPSC warned parents, caregivers and consumers to immediately stop
using convertible "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets manufactured by
Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa., due to a serious safety risk. It's like something right out of a crime novel. Earlier this week, police in Waycross, Georgia, uncovered a gruesome plot to attack and kill an elementary school teacher. The attack was masterminded by, get this, nine third graders, ranging in age from 8-10. Upon first hearing this incredible story, my initial reaction was to laugh from disbelief.

According to news reports, the alleged students brought the weapons to school, and had planned to knock their teacher unconscious with a crystal paper weight. The plot was foiled when another student, who refused to take part in the attack, reported the intentions of the other students to an administrator of the school. The students involved brought a broken steak knife, handcuffs (wonder where and how they got those), duct tape and other items to carry out their mission. The "children" even went so far as to assign tasks that included covering the windows so no one could witness the attack, and cleaning up afterwards.

Apparently, the students were upset because of the way in which the teacher had disciplined one of this miniature mob's friends. I find the most fascinating aspect of this story, not the plot itself, but the fact that everyone is ranting about how well behaved these little terrorists are, and that they didn't realize the gravity of the situation. There was even a reference about some of them thinking this was like a cartoon. Put these kids on Prozac, lock up all the televisions, and by all means, keep them away from any Bugs Bunny cartoons. Come on people, get real!

Once again, I have to ask, what on earth is wrong with the parents? Didn't the parent notice that these objects were missing from their home? If any one of these kids were my child, I would be afraid, very afraid, to go to sleep at night. The depth in which these children planned the attack was extremely intricate. Every detail had been planned methodically. Couldn't the parents tell something was wrong? This whole situation reminds me of the movie, "The Bad Seed." If you haven't seen it, rent it.

It truly sickens me to think that these kids came very close to accomplishing their goal. It also sickens me to know that these brats will be taking care of us in the future. The question now remaining is how will or should these children be disciplined? Also, I for one would like to see the parents disciplined in this case. What do you think? Drop a note to voice your opinion.

We discussed whether or not it was appropriate to show your child's room to visitors. The issue came up because another friend had given a tour of her house to a mutual friend (not the one I had the discussion with); and, during the tour, she showed the individual her adult daughter's not so clean room. As a matter of fact, the condition of the room was just down right embarrassing. Her daughter was out of the country, and left the room in total disarray.

I personally believe that the friend who showed her daughter's room was wrong. To me, there is a privacy issue involved here. Most parents that I know would say this is my daughter's room, and just walk by. I really don't know anyone who would show their child's room off without the child's permission -- especially if they are over 10 years old. My friend with whom I was discussing this, on the other hand, feels that most parents would have no problem showing off their children's rooms. So, I have decided to do a survey.

I would like to know how many parents out there would show off thier children's rooms after they reach a certain age. Just drop me a note to let me know what you think. Even if you do not have children, your comments are welcome.

Green Junior High School, shot and rendered a fellow classmate brain dead. The young accused is being charged with committing a hate crime, and is expected to be tried as an adult. He is facing 25 years to life. Although details are still sketchy, it is alleged that the suspect shot his classmate because he was sometimes known to wear makeup. Unfortunately, and understandably, this story has been overshadowed by the dreadful shooting at Nothern Illinois University. However, from all perspectives, it is just as heartwrenching.

There are so many things wrong with this picture, I simply don't know where to begin. I guess the first question is, how can someone so young generate this much hate? Where did it come from? In my mind I have reviewed the extreme homophobia exhibited by our elected officials and the supposed stalwart pundits of God. But these are supposed to be adult issues, not those of innocent children.

Please don't get me wrong, I am in no way condoning what this young man has done. He is, I believe, old enough to know right from wrong, and should be made to face the consequences of his actions. But I have to question what role his family life, and an intolerant society played in his decision to virtually mortally wound a fellow classmate because he wore makeup. Although the victim survived, he is brain dead and living on life support. He is not expected to recover.

This is supposed to be the greatest and most tolerant country in the world. We constantly criticize those nations that have abhorent human rights policies; yet, we consistently have these types of incidents right in our own backyards. The sad thing is that the hate we generate as adults is now trickling down to our much younger citizens. What is even more sad is that we as adults won't even give this issue a second thought until it hits home.

We've got to do better America. We are losing an entire generation to violence and hate. I hear the presidential candidates talk about a myriad of issues. I for one would like for someone to address the issue of how we will save our future. I want to see parents made accountable for their children's actions. I have teenagers, and you better believe that I ask the nosey, uncomfortable questions; meet the parents of their friends; drop them off at the front door of a friend's party; have them call me with updates; and set the ground rules parents are supposed to set. I may be a pain, but at least I know that I use all of my God given powers to assure that my children are my priority, and live a healthy existance.

I would like to send out my condolences to both families. When you really think about it, they both have lost children.

The program will provide states with enough money to cover enrolled patients through March 2009. The program is designed to benefit children and families who make too much for Medicaid; yet, not enough to obtain private insurance. The current legislation will cover approximately 6 million people -- most of them being children. Mr. Bush vetoed two earlier bills because he felt that they were too expensive (we won't discuss where he has already wasted billions of dollars that could have supported this program), and that they would place more children into government run health programs. Who cares as long as these children are getting the proper medical care?

The Democrats are pushing to include another 4 million individuals. Will they have to wait until the 2008 elections are over? What about those who are currently paying up the wazoo for inadequate private health insurance? We'll keep you posted.

This proposal is a result of a 2002 report on improving school bus safety. The proposed regulation will cover brand new school buses weighing 10,000 lbs. or less, and would require these buses to have "lap/shoulder" belts, and that seats be raised from 20 to 23 inches. For larger buses, that are actually responsible for carrying the bulk of our children, NHTSA recommends that each state and local jurisdiction make the choice of whether or not to install this safety gear for our children. States such as New Jersey, California, Florida, and New York -- the first to do so, have all drafted legislation requiring seat belts on all school buses. The NHTSA also proposes that seat heights be raised from 20 to 24 inches in all new school buses.

I applaude the continuing effort to place seat belts on school buses. It only makes sense, and would erase the contridiction our government imposes on highway and traffic safety. However, why is it so difficult for us to make the decision to keep our children safe while riding school buses? We have child carrier regulations, why not have regulations for the main mode of transportation for over half of our children? Why is it that we can spend millions of dollars on developing gold toilets, yet we cannot push for the development of child restraints on all school buses?

In conducting its study in 2002, NHTSA only inacted frontal collision tests. It did not, and still has not, conducted studies on side impacts and rollovers. Hopefully, with intense pressure from the public, these studies will be conducted in the near future.

What are your views. Just drop us a note, and let us know.

The issue is the "restavek's" of Haiti. This, if not already, should be, a subject that is chilling to the bone for parents, as well as the international community at large. The plight of these children will bring tears to your eyes.

Restavek's (stay withs) are the poorest of children in Haiti, who have been committed to servitude by their parents. The parents are convinced that their children will get the necessary education and care that they themselves are unable to provide. Although most of us will judge and deem this unimaginable, what has to be understood is that I am talking about the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. For these poor families, there is, unfortunately, no other alternative; and, the wish to educate these children and provide better lives for them is what is being exploited.

It is estimated that approximately 300,000 children are either left on the door, or through other arrangements, given to families to work for the assurance of obtaining education. What is actually occurring, is these children are most often abused. Most will lose total contact with their families, and never see them again. 80% of these children are female, are between the ages of 10 -14, are sexually abused, and are forced to work 10 - 14 hour days. Generally, by age 15, these children are released, and forced to live on the streets -- many opting to work as prostitutes in order to survive. If a young girl is raped and becomes pregnant, she is thrown out to fend for herself...no matter what the age.

This atrocity should no longer exist as we travel into the 21st Century. It is so easy for us to overlook these children. Afterall, they are not our responsibility, right? Well, in all good conscience, I cannot believe that to be the truth. It is our responsibility to protect all children. I look at things this way, we never know when we might need something in return, and this could be any one of our children one day. Please get involved.

To find out more on this subject, please go to: http://www.dol.gov/ILAB/media/reports/iclp/Advancing1/html/haiti.htm, http://www.haitiprojects.org/, and, http://beyondborders.net/.

Technorati Profile

Her crime -- giving her classmates a goodbye hug. As the children were being released for the weekend, the student gave two of her friends a goodbye hug . It appears that the Mascoutah School System came up with the bright idea to ban any display of public affection on school property...this includes something as innocent as a hug. The policy states: "Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved." How the system has managed to turn something as innocent as a goodbye hug into something so sinister and dirty is beyond me. What is even more amazing is that if the accused student chose not to spend two Saturdays in detention, she would have been suspended. A crime befitting a hug, right? Not!!

America, what are we becoming. This is an institution of learning. What is this school district teaching its children if it is run by paranoia? So, if two second graders decide to hold hands as they are skipping along, they are embarrassing themselves, as well as the school? I don't know about you America, but I need to know how a school district could possible come up with something this stupid.

To Mr. Sam McGowen, District Superintendent, who fully agrees with this policy, it is not the children who hug their friends that show poor taste or discredits the school. You want to stop the rumors? Fight back, in a healthy way. Be strong and ignore the taunts. I DID.

When I was in high school, no one knew that I was painfully shy; as well as, physically, mentally, sexually, and emotionally abused. Actually, they never cared. They just thought I was "strange." As a matter of fact, when it was time for people to write about me in the yearbook during my senior year, it was publicly mentioned that no one had written anything about me, so individuals made up things so that I could be included in the yearbook. Or, let's pick the time when I got the nerve to answer a question in Chemistry, and the teacher made the insensitive remark that"Ms. XXX has a voice." It wasn't enough that I was abused at home, I had to be publicly abused and humiliated in school as well.

So, what's my point.? You will only be taken down when you allow the remarks to affect you. What do I mean by this? I mean, those who put you down are really covering their own insecurities. They have no life. If they did, they wouldn't have the time to taunt, hurt, or ruin other peoples reputations. Your control is to ignore these insults. Your purpose is to get through school, and to become the great adults you know you can be. If someone put your picture up on Facebook and calls you a whore, so what. You know you aren't. There is some truth to the saying "sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me." Just keep saying that to yourself over and over again. Remember, bullying can only work if you show that it bothers you.

Join groups or clubs that are of interest to you. Write a column about bullying, and its effects on the individual being bullied. Sometimes putting things in writing allows people to see your point more clearly. If you're into Facebook and My Space like most of the kids are today, start generating healthy dialogue about the issue. Most of all, keep your parents informed. If you feel you cannot speak to your parents, find another adult that you feel you can trust such as another family member, or teacher. Don't attempt to handle this alone.

The fact remains that you need to build your self confidence. No one else can do this for you. Once you show that nothing the bully says or does affects you, you have gained the upper hand. I know it's tough, but it works. If being bullied has done nothing else, it has made me the strong person that I am today.

I worn you that this is not a post for the weak. I intend on providing as much detail about this incident as possible. Why? Because this is one of the most unimaginable crimes that has been bestowed upon a child. I don't even have the words to describe my emotions.

The story is about an 8 year old child, from Kuala Lumpur, that was abducted, tortured, brutally raped, murdered, and then stuffed in a gym bag. An autopsy revealed that not only was little Nurin Jazlin beaten, battered, and bruised from head to toe, but several items, including a cucumber had been shoved into her vaginal area. This is a dispicable crime against anyone, but for an 8 year old child to have to suffer and indure such abuse is heart wrenching, to say the least.

People, the international community must get involved in the fight to stop these cowardly, disgusting crimes against our children. Enough is enough. Why should these babies have to wait for something like this to personally affect you before you become involved? Before you go to sleep tonight, go to the link listed below to review the full story. Next, take a real good look at you own child. Hug her/him, and then get involved...this could very well be your son or daughter.

For more on the Nurin Jazlin's story, please visit: nafasg.blogspot.com/2007/10/fight-against-child-abuse-tribute-to_07.html.

Her parents are now being considered suspects in her disappearance. Although the news is now focused on whether or not her parents had anything to do with this heinous crime, my thoughts wander to a different question. Believe me when I say that my heart definitely goes out to the McCann's, but I need an explanation as to how parents could leave three small children -- all under the age of four -- in a hotel room, without any supervision whatsoever, in a strange country, with the door unlocked? They left their children, not for emergency purposes, but to have dinner with friends.

With hundreds of thousands of children missing around the world today, I find the actions on the part of the McCann's deplorable, and irresponsible. What were these "parents" thinking? We are not talking about individuals that have no social or educational skills. From what I understand, both the McCanns are doctors. Also, is anyone concerned about the safety of the two year old twins? I realize that there will be some, maybe a majority, of readers who will be taken aback by this statement; but, someone has to step outside of the box and address this issue. When are we going to start fighting for the safety of our defenseless children?

As a parent, the fact that we still have not learned to place our children as immediate priorities never ceases to amaze me. I could not for one minute imagine leaving my small children alone
at home, let alone in a strange hotel room, with the doors unlocked. What I would like to know, is whether or not the British social services is reviewing this case.

I pray everyday for the safety of Madeleine. Nothing is more heart wrenching than having a child taken from you without word or preparation. It is even more heart wrenching to have to imagine what this poor baby might be going through if she is in the hands of a deranged pedophile.

I read some of the excerpts from Kate McCann's diary, in which she states that her children were too hyper, and that she was drained. Well, Kate, welcome to the real world. The unfortunate part of all of this, is that the McCann's, at the expense of their child, have had to learn a very painful, unimaginable lesson about parental responsibility -- one that we should all pay close attention to.

My First Experience as an Empty Nestor.

So, you've finally just gotten used to the kids being home for the summer. Your nerves are back on track, because just two weeks ago you found the perfect summer time activities in which to get them involved. Then, you open a letter from school. It says. "Hope you had an enjoyable summer... see you in two weeks." Your mind begins to race. Thoughts start popping into your head. Dementia sets in. Two weeks, what does this letter mean two weeks? They just got out for the summer!

Is it me, or does it seem that summer vacations are getting shorter and shorter? My daughters are slightly older. One is ready to leave for her first year of college, and one will be a junior in high school. Even still the mania never changes, at least for me. It's sort of bittersweet. On the one hand you want them out of the house so that you can have one peaceful day; yes, even with teenagers. Yet, on the other hand, you begin to realize that their other life kicks in...one in which you become a shadow participant. Soon, they will be dependant upon their friends for conversation and advice. They won't have time to take a ride with you to the store, or to watch the "dumbest movie ever" on TV.

The difference for me this year, is that one daughter is beginning her new life as an adult, and the other is becoming increasingly involved in outside activities. Where has the time gone? Don't get me wrong, I understand that there comes the time when we need to let go. What I didn't realize was how quickly that time comes. I find myself saturating my eldest daughter with last minute information and advice I wasn't sure I had given. I find the need to make sure that she has remembered all the things that she had been taught by my husband and I. Even though my daughter has a great head on her shoulders, I just need to make sure for my own satisfaction and security. The point is, I will miss her terribly.

Of course my friends keep telling me that I have to let go. What they don't understand is that I have already let go. I did that when she started looking at her first college. The point is that throughout the years, I have watched my daughter grow into this beautiful young woman, and I am very proud of her; but, I miss the child with the inquisitive eyes, the contageous giggle, and the bounce that was her run.

No, to the contrary, there is nothing wrong with admitting that you will miss your child. Motherhood, for me, has been a most enjoyable experience. At the same time, however, I am also overjoyed that she will now begin her own special journey of life, and I only hope that she experiences great joys and blessings along the way. She deserves it.

Besides, I still have one more to cling too, right?:o)

Summer's here!!! Honey, what will we do with the kids??? If you're like most parents during summer break, you've probably been going into super panic mode trying to find enough activities for your child. Here are some things that you can do to keep your little ones busy. Not only are these activities fun for your child, but they are also fun for the entire family. And, some of these ideas can be used year round. Well, here goes. As always, if you have any suggestions, you know what to do.

1) Take Them Outdoors

Summer is the perfect time to get outside. Take advantage. How about taking your family on a nature expedition or scavenger hunt? Take a walk through you neighborhood or area parks. How many trees, flowers, insects, or plants can you identify? After collecting your items, start a nature scrapbook.

Join your area Audubon Society. This is a sure fun way to get to know our friends of flight. Do you know how many species of birds are right in your own backyard?

Grab some trash bags an start a community clean-up in your neighborhood. What is a better way to teach your child to respect nature, and the earth?

Plant flowers and trees. You don't have to have a huge backyard. Even apartment buildings have some green space.

Camp out in the backyard. Bring out the tent, dust off the sleeping bags, and dig out some of those old camp songs.

2) Craft with Reusable Household Items

You've got junk. Well, that's what most of us think about things that we don't use anymore. Have empty milk jugs, egg cartons, cereal boxes, and clothing? What most of us overlook, is that some of this "junk" is an arts and crafts goldmine, and can be a recycled over and over again.

Make a puppet theater. Just use a large shipping box to build a puppet theater to show off the dolls or puppets you made for recycling those old clothes.

Build a Diorama of your favorite stories. This is always fun. Use sections of the egg cartons to build furniture.

3) Show Them Life in Action

Collect butterflies, purchase an ant farm, or build a terrarium.

Be sure to check out some of the items we have online for outside fun and camping.

See you next time.
http://www.mykidzgotstyle.com/

Now, mind you, this was two o'clock in the morning.

While paying for my gas, a group of about 15 young people, ranging in ages from 15-20, entered the gas station. The major problem with this group at the time was its rowdiness. The kids were clearly upsetting the other customers and the owners of the gas station.

I walked over to the group and asked how old they were. When I was told their ages, I asked the 15 year old girls why they were out so late, and if their parent knew where they were. I then suggested that they go home. I should explain that this encounter was in Georgetown, in Washington, DC, and was in an area primarily full of bars. It is also fair to mention that it is not uncommon for the Metropolitan Police to question young people as to why they are out past the curfew set by the city.

All was well until a visiting 17 year old from LA decided that he was a "grown man," and could do what he wanted. I was immediately angered, not only by his tone, but also by the fact that I was old enough to be his grandmother, and his response was totally out of line. Seeing that I was becoming upset, the eldest of the group, and one of the 15 year old girls, apologized for him.

Although I was very appreciative that the other members of this group took responsibility for their friend, I felt that the apology should come from him. So, I took him to the side and explained the situation with him being in Washington, and being out so late. His response, which was actually a question, was why are you out this late? I simply informed the young man that I, by my age and maturity, earned the right to be out whenever I wanted, and that he had no right to question me. I was not the one breaking curfew, nor was I the one disturbing others. I went further to point out that I was sure his parents had not raised him to be disrespectful to his elders. I won't print what he said next. I'll just leave that up to your imagination, but it was not nice.

Well, I told him he was acting like an ass, and he all of a sudden became sensitive. He was hurt that I used a curse word. I replied that he lost the right for my respect, and that since he thought he was a man, it was now time for me to treat him like one. I informed him that I was an attorney, and that he was now breaking the law, and that if he did not leave the premises at once, I would call the proper authorities to have him removed. Suffice it to say that the group gathered their friend and immediately left; but, not without the young man repeating that nice phrase he he bestowed upon me earlier.

I then started to wonder if the young man would have had that same attitude if corporal punishment were still invoked, not only for the kids, but their parents as well. Have we become a society that is totally immune to respect? I can only assume that this type of behavior comes from something lacking in the home. Yes, I know that parents cannot regulate the behavior of their children when they are not with them, but I have to question, why were these kids out that late in the first place; and, if the parents had really drilled respect for people, especially elders, into the minds of their children.

I have time and time again witnessed parents actually hearing their children make disrespectful remarks to persons much older than them, only to hear the parents respond afterwards that their children were only standing up for themselves. And, though this really should not matter, but it does in our society, I live in an extremely influential area. These were not children from "poor" families, as I know some of you may assume. So, why do we wonder what is happening in our society today? I am the parent of two teens, and I wish one of my children would even think about displaying some of the disrespect that this kids show today. And, no, I have never laid a hand on either of my children; but, they have learned from the time that they could focus, that disrespect would not be tolerated.

It may take just a whack on the butt to turn some of these people around. When will we learn that if you cannot be respectful, you cannot care about what is going on around you. And, once you stop caring, all is lost.
